Big Girl Bed

I finally addressed the problem with Sadie's room--she was just getting too big for her toddler bed!  I didn't want to spend loads of money on a new bed, so armed with some inspiration from the internet, I set out to make her a bed on the cheap.

I started with the very cheapest IKEA bed frame available.  However, I found a brand new one on Craigslist, and saved even more money!
I took an idea from another blog online and bought some trim to dress up the headboard.  Some liquid nails and the trim was all it took.

Then I primed and painted.  That sounds easier than it actually was.  I'm a bit heavy-handed with spray paint, and if I had to do it again, I'd just use a brush!

After the paint was dry I made it into a "princess bed" by adding crystal knobs to the posts and making an upholstered back for the headboard.  Sadie helped pick out the knobs and the fabric.  The upholstery was done using a piece of plywood, a layer of dense foam, some cotton batting I already had, and the fabric.  I used a staple gun to secure the batting and fabric on the back of the board.  Then I attached that whole piece to the headboard using a pneumatic nail gun.  I was planning on trimming out that piece, but I skipped that when I realized that it wouldn't be visible from the side.

Sadie has done really well sleeping in her bed, although she still occasionally wakes up and comes in our room.  But overall it was a good change for her!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The cleaning out of the pumpkins is not a favorite chore!  Brendan doesn't mind so much anymore, but Zach needed some accessories!  Then Sadie wanted some too!

Fairy, Angry Bird, Link

Zach made his own Link shield by following a tutorial on YouTube!  I think it turned out great!

Happy First Day of Fall

I am dreaming of this:

My friends in far off (and even not-so-far-off) places assure me that their temperatures are cool and beautiful.  I miss experiencing fall!

Instead, this is my reality:

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

Every December before Christmas we head up to McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale to ride the train and see the Christmas light display.  In the past we've had to wait in line for hours, but this year, we timed everything perfectly.  We got their early and let the kids ride the carousel and play on the playgrounds, then about 30 to 40 minutes before the first train ride, we got in line.  We were on the 2nd train of the evening and were done in time to go eat and get home at a decent time!  We love this tradition!

Luminaria Run

December 3rd we drove up to Cave Creek so the boys could do the 5k Luminaria Run.  It was pretty cold, so we bundled up!  We had a fun time and got to see an amazing sunset!

December 2011

Brendan and Zach both had Christmas concerts to participate in.  Zach sang in the BFCS concert with his class, and Brendan played saxophone at the GCA Winterfest and at the Music & Arts Christmas concert.

Sadie (im)patiently waiting for the BFCS concert to start!

Somehow Zach always is right in the center for his concerts!

Brendan, pre-concert!
